틈틈영어 003/ Inclusive 와 Through (~부터~까지)

문법따윈 몰라! 틈틈이 외워부러!

얼마전 유럽 지사에 이메일을 보냈는데 요로코롬 자동회신 메일을 받았다.

"I'm out of office May 10 to 24 inclusive." 

음??? inclusive???

내가 주로 보고 쓰는 단어는  exclusive(배타적인,독점의).

그 반의어이자 자주 쓰는 동사인 include (포함하다) 의 형용사격이도 한

inclusive (포함한) 의 뜻을 모르는 바는 아니었으나...

이 생경한 쓰임새는 뭐임........

1. 많은 것을 포함한, [가격·비용 등이] 일체를 포함한, 포괄적인

2.[…에서, …까지] (고려·계산 등에) 포함하여[from ‥, to ‥]

어법 inclusive를 사용하지 않으면 Monday to Friday는 「금요일」이 포함되지 않음. 포함할 경우, Monday to Friday inclusive로 쓰지만 이는 주로 (영) 어법이고, (미)는 Monday through Friday를 많이 씀.

from 1 to 100 inclusive (1과 100도 포함하여) 1에서 100까지.

다른 뜻으로 쓰이는 건 별 관심 없고..  [~에서 ~까지] 라는 뜻으로 쓰이는 inclusive 를 후벼파본다.

일단 구글링!  Oxford 사전에는 해당 용법이 아래와 같이 써 있다. 

~~부터 ~~까지 포함해서... 라는 얘기를 할 때,  

영국식 영어에서는 inclusive를 미국식 영어에서는 through 를 주로 쓴다는 얘기. 

역시 한국식 영어교육은 미국영어 중심인게야;;; 그러니 inclusive가 익숙하지 않았던게야;;; 

In British English inclusive is used to emphasize that you are including the days, months, numbers, etc. mentioned, especially in formal or official situations.

In North American English through is used.

To can also be used with this meaning in British English and North American English.

Answer questions 8 to 12 inclusive. 

Answer questions 8 through 12. 

The amusement park is open daily from May to October inclusive.

The amusement park is open (from) May through October.

The park is open from 1 May to 31 October.

자료를 더 찾아보니 단순하게 "from~to~" 를 쓰면 

마지막 하나가 포함이냐 아니냐의 미묘한 해석 차이가 있을 수 있다고 한다.

그리고 inclusive를 쓸때는 "from" 이 생략도 가능하다 하니 참고!
